Situation in Europe

According to the data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) for week 48, the overall incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) is similar to the same period last season. The incidence of influenza at the level of the European Union and European Economic Area remains low. COVID-19 activity is declining, although the majority of cases continue to occur among people aged 65 and older. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has activity increased compared to the previous week, particularly among children aged 0–4 years. The seasonal rise in RSV incidence has begun, and all countries should be prepared for RSV activity to increase in the coming weeks.

Vaccination Strongly Recommended

Residents are urged to get vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19. Both vaccines can be administered during a single visit to a healthcare provider.

  • COVID-19 vaccines: Available at all healthcare facilities.
  • Influenza vaccines: Free for at-risk groups at their registered healthcare facility.

Groups especially encouraged to get vaccinated:

  • Individuals aged 65 and older
  • Residents of long-term care facilities
  • People with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems
  • Healthcare workers
  • Pregnant women
  • Children aged 2–7 years (free influenza vaccination available this autumn)

Preventative Hygiene Measures

To protect against influenza and other respiratory illnesses, NPHC specialists recommend:

  • Covering your nose and mouth with disposable tissues, a scarf, or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.
  • Washing hands regularly with soap and water or using hand sanitizer, especially after coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Regularly cleaning and ventilating living spaces.

If you experience flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, headache, joint pain, etc.), contact your family doctor immediately.
