NPHC Recommendations to Residents Regarding the Fire in Šilutė
Specialists from the National Public Health Centre (NPHC) warn residents that smoke from the fire that broke out on Šilo St in Šilutė may pose a risk to health.
If you are outdoors and see smoke or notice a specific odour, move away from the area so that the wind does not carry the smoke toward you. Residents living closer to the fire site are advised to avoid staying outdoors. If remaining indoors, keep windows, vents, and doors closed. If your home has a mechanical ventilation system, heat recovery ventilation, or air conditioning, it is recommended to switch these systems off.
If you use well water, cover the wells and do not use the water for food preparation or drinking purposes. Do not leave animals outdoors.
If you feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.
Drivers passing near the fire site are advised to keep vehicle windows tightly closed.
Please note that symptoms of acute exposure to air pollutants may include:
- irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat;
- shortness of breath;
- coughing;
- reduced lung function (especially in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease);
- increased susceptibility to respiratory infections (particularly among children);
- aggravated allergic inflammatory reactions of the respiratory tract.
