Recommendations for Residents Regarding the Fire at the Kaunas Car Parts Landfill
On August 12, a fire broke out in Petrašiūnai, Kaunas. Preliminary data indicate that the fire involved a car parts landfill. The fire was contained at 1:26 PM, but black smoke is still visible.
Specialists from the National Public Health Centre remind that smoke from fires can be hazardous to health.
- If you are outside and see smoke or smell a strong odor, move away so that the wind does not carry smoke toward you.
- For residents living near the fire: stay indoors, and avoid opening vents, windows, or doors.
- If your home has mechanical ventilation, a heat recovery system, or air conditioning, turn these systems off.
- If you use a well, cover it and do not use its water for drinking or cooking.
- Do not leave animals outdoors.
- If you feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.
When driving near the fire site, keep car windows tightly closed.
Acute symptoms from exposure to pollutants may include:
- Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing
- Reduced lung function (especially in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Increased susceptibility to respiratory infections (particularly in children)
- Exacerbation of allergic respiratory reactions
