Recommendations for Residents Regarding the Fire at the Kaunas Car Parts Landfill

On August 12, a fire broke out in Petrašiūnai, Kaunas. Preliminary data indicate that the fire involved a car parts landfill. The fire was contained at 1:26 PM, but black smoke is still visible.

Specialists from the National Public Health Centre remind that smoke from fires can be hazardous to health.

  • If you are outside and see smoke or smell a strong odor, move away so that the wind does not carry smoke toward you.
  • For residents living near the fire: stay indoors, and avoid opening vents, windows, or doors.
  • If your home has mechanical ventilation, a heat recovery system, or air conditioning, turn these systems off.
  • If you use a well, cover it and do not use its water for drinking or cooking.
  • Do not leave animals outdoors.
  • If you feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.

When driving near the fire site, keep car windows tightly closed.

Acute symptoms from exposure to pollutants may include:

  • Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Reduced lung function (especially in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Increased susceptibility to respiratory infections (particularly in children)
  • Exacerbation of allergic respiratory reactions

Following these precautions can help protect your health while the fire is being controlled.
