Plane on Fire in Liepkalnis

The National Public Health Centre (NPHC) has received information that, on 25 November at around 5:31 am, a cargo plane flying from Leipzig crashed and a fire broke out close to Liepkalnis street in Vilnius, possibly in a residential area.

Specialists are warning residents that the smoke from the fire could be dangerous to health. The smoke is highly penetrating and irritates the respiratory tract and the mucous membranes of the eyes, so it is essential to protect these parts of the body.

Health Effects

Symptoms of acute exposure to pollutants include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; shortness of breath; coughing; impaired lung function (especially in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease); increased susceptibility of the respiratory tract to infections (especially in children); and exacerbation of allergic inflammatory reactions in the respiratory tract.

Recommendations

  • For those living close to the area, stay indoors and keep vents, windows, and doors closed. If possible, move away from the fire.
  • Drivers passing near the fire area are advised to keep their car windows tightly closed.
  • Livestock and pets should also be kept away from affected areas.
  • Those who feel direct exposure or discomfort (e.g., seeing black smoke or smelling a specific odour) should evacuate to a location upwind of the fire. Pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as their babies, are especially advised to stay away from smoke-affected areas.
  • All outdoor objects that were in contact with the fire (e.g., outdoor furniture, cars, etc.) should be washed thoroughly.
  • If there is a mechanical ventilation system, air conditioning, or heat recovery system, turn off these units.
  • If you suspect poisoning or feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.
