NPHC: Updates on Tick-Borne Encephalitis and Pneumococcal Vaccinations
The National Public Health Centre (NPHC) under the Ministry of Health announces that, starting from 9 December, 2025, the Coordination Council of the National Programme on Immunoprophylaxis 2024–2028, after reviewing independent expert recommendations and financial feasibility, has decided to expand tick-borne encephalitis vaccination to include individuals aged 50–60. Previously, state-funded vaccination was available only for residents aged 50–55.
This age group was selected based on epidemiological data, as the highest incidence and most severe disease outcomes are observed among people aged 50–60. These are economically active individuals, meaning illness could lead to significant economic losses. Research data indicate that the average age of tick-borne encephalitis patients in Lithuania is approximately 55 years.
Additionally, we inform that, from 9 December, 2025, the age threshold for free pneumococcal vaccination has been lowered – individuals aged 65 and older can now receive the vaccine free of charge. Previously, this option was available only to residents aged 75 and above.
For vaccination, we recommend contacting your healthcare provider.
