Incidence Rates Decreased During the Holiday Week, but Caution Is Still Needed

According to data possessed by the National Public Health Centre under the Ministry of Health (NPHC), influenza, acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), and COVID-19 incidence rates in Lithuania decreased during the holiday week. This trend is typical for this period, as the number of people visiting doctors usually declines during school holidays, resulting in lower reported incidence rates. However, the flu season is still ongoing, and NPHC specialists advise the public to continue acting responsibly – avoid gatherings if experiencing symptoms to prevent spreading viruses to others, and continue following basic preventive measures.

During the second-to-last week of the year (week 52), the overall incidence rate for influenza, URTI, and COVID-19 was 766.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest incidence was reported in Panevėžys County, and the highest in Vilnius County.

A total of 250 people were hospitalized in Lithuania due to influenza, and 33 due to COVID-19. Among these patients, 19 were treated in intensive care units. There were three influenza-related deaths (seven in total this season) in Kaunas, Vilnius, and Marijampolė Counties; the individuals were aged 60–69, 70–79, and 80–89, had chronic illnesses, and were unvaccinated. Additionally, two COVID-19-related deaths (26 in total this season) were registered, both in Kaunas County; the individuals were aged 70–79 and 80–89, one had chronic illnesses, the other’s health status is unknown, and both were unvaccinated.

Prevention Is Key

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the risk of severe influenza remains similar to previous seasons. However, higher incidence rates may increase the demand for healthcare services and hospitalizations.

Alongside the primary preventive measure – vaccination – the following general measures are recommended:

  • Avoid close contact with people showing symptoms of illness or acute respiratory infections (runny nose, cough, sneezing, etc.); wash or disinfect hands frequently; avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • If symptoms develop such as a runny nose, cough, or sneezing: follow proper etiquette (cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue when sneezing or coughing, and dispose of tissues immediately); wash or disinfect hands frequently; ventilate rooms regularly; stay home when possible and avoid contact with others. If visiting public spaces or healthcare facilities, wear a medical mask.
