Hospital Admission Rates Are Not Declining

The National Public Health Centre under the Ministry of Health (NPHC) informs that over the period 3-9 April, the number of reported cases of influenza, acute respiratory infections (ARI) and COVID-19 decreased, but there were more hospitalizations.

The total incidence rate last week was 793.6 cases/100 000 population compared to 917.7 cases/100 000 population  in week 13 of this year (27 March - 2 April).

The highest incidence rates were reported in Šilute District (1359.20 cases/100 000 population), Kėdainiai District (1267.73 cases/100 000 population), and Panevėžys (1223.34 cases/100 000 population). The epidemic level of incidence (more than 1 500 cases/100 000 population) was not reached in any Municipality for three consecutive weeks.

Last week (week 14/2023), 74 people were hospitalized due to flu in the country, compared to 70 a week before. As in previous weeks, most of them were children under 17 years of age. 2 minors were treated in intensive care units.

According to the data from National Public Health Laboratory, in week 13/2023, a total of 42 specimens were taken from patients with symptoms of ARI, of which 33 tested positive for type B virus.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), in Europe for week 13/2023, 2 588 of 35 495 specimens taken to determine the influenza virus tested positive for an influenza virus; 79% were type B and 21% were type A.

NPHC specialists remind everybody about the importance of following hygiene rules to protect oneself against flu, ARI and COVID-19. Wash your hands regularly; avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, especially with unclean hands; frequently ventilate and wet clean the premises; follow the coughing and sneezing etiquette; and stay away from people who cough and sneeze.  Contact your family doctor as soon as your symptoms begin.
