Cold-related Illnesses in Lithuania Remain Persistent
In Lithuania, the incidence of influenza, acute upper respiratory tract infections (AURTI), and COVID-19 (coronavirus infection) remains high compared to previous flu seasons. According to the data acquired by the National Public Health Centre (NPHC), from March 17–23 (week 12 of this year), the overall incidence rate increased to 1593.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (compared to 1454.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 11). Last season, during the same period (2024, week 12), the incidence was lower (1240.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), but it had also increased compared to the week before.
The lowest incidence remained in Panevėžys County, while the highest was in Vilnius County. Epidemic level was reached in 25 Municipalities (surpassing 1500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The epidemiological situation is continuously monitored and communication with Municipalities is ongoing. If necessary, declaring an epidemic at the Municipal level would be recommended. As of today, no Municipality has declared an epidemic. It is important to note that when deciding on declaring an epidemic, additional criteria, such as the occupancy of hospital, intensive care, and intensive therapy beds due to influenza and/or COVID-19 are considered.
The number of hospitalizations is decreasing – in week 12 of this year, 75 people were hospitalized due to influenza and 11 due to COVID-19. Five people were treated in intensive care units for both influenza and COVID-19. Three deaths from influenza were registered (a total of 65 this season): one person was in the 70–79 age group, and two were in the 80–89 age group. All had chronic illnesses and were not vaccinated against seasonal influenza. One death from COVID-19 was recorded (a total of 56 this season).
Flu season continues
Given the increased incidence of cold-related illnesses, NPHC specialists urge everyone to continue following personal hygiene rules and the etiquette for coughing and sneezing. It is advised to wash hands frequently, avoid touching surfaces that may be contaminated with viruses, ventilate rooms regularly, and clean them with a damp cloth. If experiencing symptoms similar to a cold (such as sore throat, headache, nasal congestion, or runny nose), stay at home or work from home and contact your family doctor. If sick, it is recommended to wear a medical mask or respirator, which helps contain respiratory secretions when coughing or sneezing.
NPHC specialists remind everyone that the most effective protection against influenza and its complications is vaccination. Vaccination is available throughout the flu season, and it is especially recommended for individuals in risk groups. COVID-19 vaccinations are available to residents at any healthcare facility. Seasonal flu vaccinations are free only for those in risk groups and only at the healthcare facility where they are registered.
Please note that healthcare and social care institutions, depending on their infrastructure and resources, may apply stricter infection control measures, including patient flow management, wearing personal protective equipment, limiting visitor numbers or the duration of visits, and more.

Respiratory syncytial virus activity peaked in week 52/2024 and has been decreasing since, although it remains high, with various trends observed at the country level.
Influenza and COVID-19 are more severe for individuals over 65 years old, while respiratory syncytial virus infection is more severe in children under 5 years old.
