Advice for Residents Regarding Burning Landfill
In the event of a fire at Lapiai landfill site, specialists from the National Public Health Centre (NPHC) remind residents that smoke from the fire can be hazardous to health.
If you are outside and you notice dark smoke and smell a specific odour, move to the windward side to avoid the wind carrying the smoke towards you. Residents living closer to the fire are advised to stay indoors and keep all vents, windows, and doors closed. If you have mechanical ventilation, heat recovery or air conditioning systems in your home, you are advised to turn them off. If you have wells, cover them and do not use the water for drinking or cooking. Do not leave animals outside. If you feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.
When driving through the affected area, ensure that car windows are closed tightly.
As a reminder, symptoms of acute exposure to pollutants include irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, shortness of breath, coughing, impaired lung function (especially in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), increased susceptibility of the respiratory tract to respiratory tract infections (especially in children), and exacerbation of allergic inflammatory reactions in the respiratory tract.
