Recommendations for Residents Regarding the Fire in the Klaipėda Seaport Territory
After the Fire and Rescue Department reported a fire at the Klaipėda Seaport cargo terminal, specialists from the National Public Health Centre warn that smoke from the fire may be hazardous to health.
- If you are outdoors and see smoke or smell an unusual odour, move away so that the wind does not blow smoke toward you.
- Residents living closer to the fire are advised not to go outside; if staying at home, do not open vents, windows, or doors.
- If your home has mechanical ventilation systems, air recuperation, or air conditioning, it is recommended to turn them off.
- If you feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.
- When driving past the fire site, keep car windows tightly closed.
Reminder – symptoms of acute exposure to pollutants include: eye, nose, and throat irritation; shortness of breath; coughing; reduced lung function (especially in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease); increased susceptibility to respiratory infections (especially in children); and worsening of allergic inflammatory reactions in the airways.
