Recommendations for Residents Following a Fire in Klaipėda District
Following a fire at a sawmill in Maciuičiai village, Klaipėda district, specialists from the National Public Health Centre remind residents that smoke from the fire can be hazardous to health.
- If you are outdoors and see dark smoke or smell a strong odour, move away to avoid inhaling the fumes carried by the wind.
- Residents living closer to the fire are advised to stay indoors and keep windows, vents, and doors closed.
- If your home has a mechanical ventilation system or air recuperation, it is recommended to turn it off.
- Do not leave pets outdoors.
- If you start feeling unwell, seek medical attention immediately.
- When driving near the fire area, keep car windows tightly closed.
Symptoms of Acute Pollutant Exposure:
🔹 Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.
🔹 Shortness of breath, coughing.
🔹 Reduced lung function (especially for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - COPD).
🔹 Increased susceptibility to respiratory infections (especially in children).
🔹 Worsened allergic or inflammatory respiratory reactions.
