Advice to Residents on the Sawmill Fire in Panevėžys

Following the fire at the sawmill on Lentpjūvių Street in Panevėžys, specialists from the National Public Health Centre are reminding residents that smoke from the fire can pose a serious health hazard.

If you are outside and notice dark smoke or a strong odor, move to the windward side to avoid inhaling smoke. Residents living near the fire are advised to stay indoors, keeping windows, doors, and vents closed. If your home has mechanical ventilation or heat recovery systems, please turn them off. Do not leave animals outside during this time. If you experience any symptoms of illness, seek medical attention immediately.

When driving through the area, it is recommended to keep car windows closed tightly.

Symptoms of acute exposure to pollutants include: eye, nose, and throat irritation; shortness of breath; coughing; impaired lung function (especially in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease); increased susceptibility to respiratory infections (particularly in children); and exacerbation of allergic inflammatory reactions in the respiratory tract.
