Constant wastewater monitoring sites
Constant monitoring sites Wastewater samples are taken in wastewater reception chambers of wastewater treatment plants, i.e., untreated wastewater is tested.
Samples are taken from the following wastewater treatment plants:
Vilnius Wastewater Treatment Plant, Titnago str. 74, LT-02300, Vilnius, which cleans wastewater collected from approximately 500 thousand population.
Kaunas Wastewater Treatment Plant, Marvelės st. 199A, LT-46201, Kaunas, which cleans wastewater collected from about 350 thousand population.
Klaipėda Wastewater Treatment Plant, Dumpių village, Klaipėda district, LT-96361, which cleans wastewater collected from about 170 thousand population.
Wastewater samples are taken by automatic sewage shovels programmed for hourly sampling. The contents of the samples taken throughout the day are mixed and poured into a 1-liter capacity sterile bottle which is sent to the NVSPL at a controlled temperature of 5 ± 3 °C. NVSPL prepares a sample of wastewater for testing and determines the number of Sars-Cov-2 genes per unit of volume.
The National Public Health Laboratory uses digital PCR equipment to detect SARS-COV-2 virus by using the method of dPCR (digital polymerase chain reaction) for detection of viral RNA copies. The method is in line with the European Commission recommendations (EU) 2021/4722021 of 17 March 2021. NVSPL conducts the testing of wastewater for the SARS-COV-2 virus in pursuance of the Order No. V-2627 "On the approval of the description of the procedure for monitoring the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its strains in wastewater" of the Minister of Health of 18/11/2021.
