Kretinga District Residents Advised Against Using Water from Flooded Wells for Consumption
In the Kretinga district, with water levels in the Minija and Akmena rivers reaching critical levels, there is a risk that wells may also become flooded. The National Public Health Centre (NPHC), in response to this situation, urges residents to avoid using water from flooded wells for consumption. Such water may be contaminated with chemical substances (e.g., nitrites, nitrates) and microorganisms (resulting from polluted soil or decaying animal remains, such as rodents).
Residents are advised to use bottled drinking water for food preparation and follow the recommendations outlined in this announcement.
After the flood subsides, it is recommended to clean and disinfect wells and conduct water quality testing.
Families with infants under six months old or pregnant women using well water for consumption are reminded that they can contact NPHC to have their water tested for nitrite and nitrate contamination. These tests are funded by the State.
