Flu Season Nears Its End: Illness Rates Are Decreasing

According to the data possessed by the National Public Health Centre, during the week of April 21–27 (week 17 of 2025), the overall incidence rate of flu, acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), and COVID-19 in Lithuania decreased to 705.1 cases per 100,000 population, down from 1,159.2 cases per 100,000 the previous week.

The lowest incidence was recorded in Panevėžys County, while the highest was in Vilnius County. No Municipality exceeded the epidemic threshold of 1,500 cases per 100,000 residents, and none have declared an epidemic so far.

Last week, 34 people were hospitalized with the flu and 5 with COVID-19.
There was one reported death from the flu, bringing the seasonal total to 74. The individual was aged 80–89, had chronic illnesses, and had not been vaccinated against the seasonal flu.
No COVID-19-related deaths were reported last week (the seasonal total remains at 58).

How to Protect Yourself

Although the flu season is expected to officially end in a few weeks (during week 20), it is still recommended to:

  • Practice good hand hygiene
  • Follow proper coughing and sneezing etiquette (cover your mouth and nose with a disposable tissue)
  • Regularly ventilate and clean indoor spaces with damp cleaning methods
  • Stay home and contact your doctor if you experience cold-like symptoms such as a sore throat, headache, nasal congestion, or runny nose.

Situation in Europe

According to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) for week 16 of this year, the incidence of URTIs is declining in European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries.

Flu activity peaked during week 6 of 2025 and has been decreasing since.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity reached its highest point in week 52 of 2024 and has also been declining, although levels remain elevated. Some countries are still reporting RSV outbreaks.
COVID-19 activity began declining in the summer of 2024 and has remained low through the winter.

Flu tends to be more severe in people aged 45 and older, while RSV more often affects children under the age of 5.
